During the Tokyo to Osaka virtual team challenge your team of 1 – 4 people will work together and take a 672km (420mi) journey through Japan from Tokyo to Osaka.

Each time anyone on your team runs, walks, or hikes your team advances along an interactive map towards the finish.

Your team members can be located anywhere in the world!

WHAT YOU GET

Badges and finisher’s patch

FINISHER PATCH

Once your team finishes the course you’ll receive a special code that you can use to receive a free custom finisher’s patch (just pay shipping).

The Tokyo – Osaka finishers patches are 3″ embroidered fabric patches with an iron on backing.

DIGITAL BADGES

Your team will earn up to nine special digital badges as you make your way along the course.

How to add distance during this challenge

Your team will use Virtual Baton app to complete the Tokyo – Osaka team challenge

Use the app to manage, and interact with your team, and watch your team move along the course.

There are two ways to add distance during the challenge:

Add distance manually using the Virtual Baton App manual uploading tool
Connect Virtual Baton App with a supported fitness tracking app

Virtual Baton App is currently compatible with MapMyRun and Garmin Connect.

Start the challenge anytime. Your team time doesn’t begin until you start your team clock.

Use the leaderboard to compare your time to other teams, or set your own goal and complete the challenge at your own pace. There are no cut-off times!

THE COURSE

Cover up to 672km (420mi) through Japan

The Tokyo to Osaka virtual challenge covers a total of 672km (420mi).

Teams begin in Tokyo at the start of the Tokyo Marathon course, then complete a route that finishes in the city of Osaka.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Receive special emails and notifications when your team reaches famous landmarks during the challenge!

Your team starts this challenge by following all 42.2km of the Tokyo Marathon course!

Stop by the ocean to see the Great Buddha of Kamakura (and maybe catch some virtual surf on the virtual beaches while you’re there!)

Catch a virtual sunrise from the summit of Mount Fuji!

Take a special detour through all 1,000 torii gates of the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto.

Finish at Osaka Castle where the post challenge virtual victory celebration doesn’t stop until the final team reaches the finish!

Your team members can be located anywhere in the world!

Run, walk, hike, or hit the treadmill then use Virtual Baton App to add your distance to your team total.

Track your team time on the leaderboard (if you’re into that sort of thing) and watch your team move along an interactive map of the course.

FAQ’s

TEAM SETUP

How do I join a team?

To create a new team or join an existing team register for the Tokyo to Osaka virtual challenge. After you register you will receive an email with a personal activation code (usually within 48 hours of registration).

Download Virtual Baton App, then use your team code to access your team.

Does my team have to be exactly 4 people?

No! Your team can be made up of anywhere from 1 – 4 people.

Do my team members have to be in the same area?

No. Your team can be made up of people located anywhere in the world!

Do we have to finish the challenge by a specific date?

No. You can take as long as you want to finish the challenge.

USING VIRTUAL BATON APP

What types of exercise count?

There are two divisions in the Tokyo to Osaka Challenge.

Runs, walks, hikes, and steps will add distance in the Run/Walk division.

Cycling and indoor cycling adds distance in the Riding/Cycling division.

Can I add steps?

Yes. Steps can be manually added to Virtual Baton App. Steps are converted at 1,000 steps = 760m

Do I have to carry my phone with me while I run?

No. The only time you need your phone is when you are using the Virtual Baton app to add distance to your team, chat with team members, or see where your team is at on the map!

If I run/walk with a team member will both our distances count?

Yes! Any team member at any time add distance to your team total.

Do I have to use a fitness app to track my distance?

No. You can always manually upload distance (including steps) using the manual upload option in Virtual Baton App.

If I use a fitness app and set my activities to private will they still count?

Yes. When you first connect a fitness app account to Virtual Baton App it will ask for permission to view your private activities. If you select this option then any activities that you make private will still count towards your team total.

Do treadmills count?

Yes! You can run/walk on a treadmill and count those miles towards your team total.

Is there a minimum distance that I need to cover?

There are no distance minimums set for any team member, or any activities. You can throw down 100 meters and call it a day if you’d like!

What‘s stopping someone from adding a bunch of distance that they didn’t complete?

While we do monitor accounts for an suspicious activity (e.g. someone running at world record pace) we have found that all of our participants are honest about their uploads.

There are no prizes for first place so if someone adds a bunch of distance that they didn’t run or walk they are only cheating themselves out of the full challenge experience.
