Each time anyone on your team runs, walks, or hikes your team advances along an interactive map towards the finish.

Your team members can be located anywhere in the world!

Finish the course to get a special code that you can use to receive a free custom finisher’s patch (just pay shipping & handling).

The West Coast Trail finishers patches are 3″ embroidered fabric patches with an iron on backing.

How to add distance during the challenge

Your team will use Virtual Baton app to complete the West Coast Trail team challenge

Use the app to manage, and interact with your team, and watch your team move along the course.

There are two ways to add distance during the challenge:

Add distance (or steps) manually using the Virtual Baton App manual uploading tool
Connect Virtual Baton App with a supported fitness tracking app

Virtual Baton App is currently compatible with MapMyRun and Garmin Connect.

The West Coast Trail virtual challenge is built for everyone.

Start the challenge anytime. Your team time doesn’t begin until you start your team clock.

Use the leaderboard to compare your time to teams that have completed the challenge in the past.

Or, set your own goal and complete the challenge at your own pace!

THE COURSE

Cover up to 75 km (47 mi) of rugged virtual terrain along the west coast of Vancouver Island!

The West Coast Trail virtual challenge covers a total of 75 km (47 mi).

Your teams starts at the south end of the trail in Port Renfrew and completes the entire length of the trail finishing at the northern end in Pachena Bay.

Assemble your team, run, walk, or hike, and move along the map

Your team members can be located anywhere in the world!

Run, walk, hike, or hit the treadmill then use Virtual Baton App to add your distance to your team total.

Track your team time on the leaderboard (if you’re into that sort of thing) and watch your team move along an interactive map of the course.

FAQ’s

TEAM SETUP

How do I join a team?

To create a new team register for the West Coast Trail virtual challenge. After you register you will receive an email with a team code. Download Virtual Baton App, then use your team code to access your team.

You can then invite your team members to join your team within Virtual Baton app.

Does my team have to be exactly 4 people?

No! Your team can be made up of anywhere from 1 – 4 people.

Do my team members have to be in the same area?

No. Your team can be made up of runners located anywhere in the world!

USING VIRTUAL BATON APP

What types of exercise count?

Runs, walks, and hikes will add distance during the West Coast Trail challenge.

Can I add my steps?

Yes. Steps can be manually added to Virtual Baton App. Steps are converted at 1,000 steps = 760m

Do I have to carry my phone with me while I run/walk?

No. The only time you need your phone is when you are using the Virtual Baton app to add distance to your team, chat with team members, or see where your team is at on the map!

If I run/walk with a team member will both our distances count?

Yes! Any team member at any time add distance to your team total.

Do I have to use a fitness app to track my distance?

No. You can always manually upload distance (including steps) using the manual upload option in Virtual Baton App.

If I use a fitness app and set my activities to private will they still count?

Yes. When you first connect a fitness app account to Virtual Baton App it will ask for permission to view your private activities. If you select this option then any activities that you make private will still count towards your team total.

Do treadmills count?

Yes! You can run/walk on a treadmill and count those miles towards your team total.

Is there a minimum distance that I need to cover?

There are no distance minimums set for any team member, or any activities. You can throw down 100 meters and call it a day if you’d like!
